Scholars do not accept Indian puranic contents as facts of history; many scholars even are in a habit of putting a vague side of the puranic descriptions of the ancient world which is not before anybody else to explain now. Many scientific journals do not accept puranic references in scientific articles because the peers are ignorant on this subject(!). Big people think very small of others, till they reach their stage of ignorance with time.
Indian purans put the river Ganges in the Saka island whose inhabitants worship a Saka Tree; Ptolemy has clearly shown this tree in some of his maps. This Saka island was the home of Mt Meru, or Mt Sumeru. And thus all the Sixteen Good-lands of the Avesta which scholars of the Avesta do not find them in Iran or elsewhere, lies in this island. Therefore to paint this mountain as imaginary is totally incorrect.
Indian purans identify Saka island with seven streams of the river Ganges with names like : Siva-jala, Kumari-Nanda, Siva- Gouri, Sibetika, Tridiba, Dhenuka, and Iskhu-jala. The puranas also inform that there were no kings in this island to punish its people who were leading a virtuous life.
Vayu puranas speaks of its seven mountains as : Mt Meru, Mt Udaya, Mt Jaladhara and Mt Rebate, Mt Brihat-Shyama, Mt Antar-giri, Mt Ambikeya near which was Mt Ramyak, and then Mt Kesari.
Ambikeya country is identified with Mt Modaka(Modiane of Ptolemy), and the latter was a mountain of the Kesara country, which is same as Caesarea of the classical literature. Skanda purana knows this as Kesuria in whose territory was Mt Meru. It was name of a place as well as name of a country whose other name was Kosala and it was situated on the bank of the river Koa-Indus. The interesting part of this puranic description is more truthful in its content when it says that Jaladhara and Revata(anciently identifies the rising place of the star Revati) both marks the Coomar and Coomari or Kumara and Kaumari islands; and names of these two islands are seen in the Periplus accounts of the Erythraean Sea.
Antar-giri more importantly identifies its geographical situation being neighbourly to Caesarea and Herat. The purana sees this mountain as a mountain of silver.
