Athletics in the Hellenistic World identifies athletes of the whole of the ‘inhabited world’; it is completely wrong to consider it as a Greek practice only. Michael B. Poliakoff’s review of Sebastian Scharff and others (ed.) book, Athletics in the Hellenistic World…in BMCR(2018.03.33) does not portray ancient Athletes as belonging to a heterogeneous group rather the name Hellenistic gives a different picture of the world of ancient sports.
It is a futile note to read that death of Alexander the Great created a significant gap in knowledge and understanding of the changes in Greek social institutions. Understanding of the classical Greece should be searched within the meaning of the Hellas, Hellespont, Graii, Dasii, Captos, Didyma, Athens, Zion, and Delphi etc. Meaning of Greek polis is yet to be understood by the present scholarly world who should know that present Greece does not represent its ancient counterpart at all.
Alexander during his campaign took Kalama, a philosopher with him who entered into ‘fire’ and killed himself because he caught cold. This Kalama belonged to a class of philosopher of ancient times to which Calimachus belonged. All philosophers of that particular region were known by ;one’ name only; here Berenice refers to ancient Baranasi. Aitia was a place-name like Kalama; the main problem with Greek scholars is that they failed to identify the ancient Ptolemais or Ptolemies. The meaning of Ptolemais is ‘Lotus’ region; the Bible calls it as Tolla. Depending on the colour of the Lotus the place has taken different names ; Ophir identifies the region of Blue Lotus. This has been reflected in Homer’s epics when Ulysses passed this region on his return journey from Troy to Ithica. Eythykles identifies the region of Erythraean Sea or the Red Sea which is again the same as Caspian Sea. Euthymos hailed from a place in this name near Thebes or ancient Sivi. Astylos dentifies Astola, Milo is as same as Milloi or the Malla country.
Syra-cusan is a wonderful name that identifies a Kushan’ of Kusan’, name of a dynasty also that originated in the ‘Syra’ or ‘Sri’ or ‘Sir’ region which is the other name for Heaven. Sotades of Crete, similarly marks ‘Wuto’ people to whom certain historians identify as people from other religions but staying in Crete, same as Cete or Cetiya region. Agonothesia pinpoints the Agni or the Achaeans on the bank of the the Assien river; it has nothing to do with ‘Finances, Ideology, Identities’.
Ancient Greece identity is the identity of ‘knowledge and wisdom’ that originated from a particular geographical base. Poseidippus’ Hippika shows the origin of ‘alphabets’ or ‘lipika’ which is associated with Bodhisattva same as Poseidippus. Ptolemais was the wonder of the ancient world, and academic scholarship on both side of the world failed miserably to know this and understand this meaning. hysplex marks Hyspalia on the bank of the ancient Indus river which was a part of Caesarea itself.
Ancient Greece lives within the Jambudvipa map of Ptolemy on the ‘north’ and it identifies Siddhapura, the seat of learning of the ancient world. Unless the original land of the Greeks is understood properly there is no meaning in writing different aspects of its history which somehow transported from its ancient seat in an unknown time of human civilization after the Great Flood.
