Albania’s world heritage site at Butrint is mostly misunderstood by scholars; name Butrint, according to scholars, has been derived from Buthrotum or ‘Bouth-roton’ means ‘Buddha-ratan’ or the ‘Triple-gems’ of the Buddhist literature; this term can only be understood with its historic relationship with Epirus, Vivari and Vlore. The ensemble of the heritage site remembers the ancient site of Bavari and Epirus which was royal seat of King Milinda near Alaba or Mt Alavi of Pali literature where Alexander met Darius.
Albania finds its root in Alavi or Alaba; and Epirus’s root is in Rupa Sari or Rupsa. It was name of Sariputa’s mother, whose family identity was ‘Sarada’; and from this name Saranda has been derived. Milinda’s capital identifies Alexandria, and the latter is a combination of two names: Alika and Sundara. Asokan Rock Edicts finds Epirus at the southern border of his country at Pateli. Albanian Kombetar marks Kambisthala same as Kamboj, it was one of the five mouths of the river Ganges. The Chaonian tribe were ancient Chera people whose settlements were neighbourly to Cholas and the Pandions. Together they constituted the ancient Sea People. History of these people as said and written by authors finds them as a discoordinated historic group; their seat of ancient settlements should have been identified along with Pillars of Hercules.
According to Unesco,’ The property is a microcosm of Mediterranean history, with occupation dating from 50 000 BC, at its earliest evidence, up to the 19th century AD. Prehistoric sites have been identified within the nucleus of Butrint, the small hill surrounded by the waters of Lake Butrint and Vivari Channel, as well as in its wider territory. From 800 BC until the arrival of the Romans, Butrint was influenced by Greek culture, bearing elements of a “polis” and being settled by Chaonian tribes. In 44 BC Butrint became a Roman colony and expanded considerably on reclaimed marshland, primarily to the south across the Vivari Channel, where an aqueduct was built. In the 5th century AD Butrint became an Episcopal centre; it was fortified and substantial early Christian structures were built’. History of Christianity which scholars find within the geographical parameters of Epirus needs to be addressed along with Alika and Sundara near which was the City of Basileon and Mt Alavi. City of Rome which identifies the birthplace of Rama, and the House of Patelene are also very close to its border.
Burnt Island, according to the Periplus lies after the coast of Arabia. This name has been derived from ‘Poda-pada’ means ‘burnt villages’; these villages were Sakyan settlements on the bank of the river Achiravati(Ajuravati, or the river Jamuna) which Virodhaka(son of Prsenjit), King of Kosala, set fire during the time of the Buddha.
Saranda identifies a cetiya or a stupa at a place in this name; it was also the name of a Yakkha.
