Unesco’s scholarship finds ‘Messel Pit as the single best fossil site which contributes to the understanding of evolution and past environments during the Palaeogene, a period which saw the emergence of the first modern mammals. The property includes a detailed geological record of middle Eocene age, dating from 47-48 million years ago’ ; modern Messel Pit’s root is in Mosyllum of the Periplus which was linked to the ancient frankincense land. This was a land in the Erythraen Sea region with which Gerrizim(root of the name Germany’) was well connected.
Messel Pit is located in Messel(Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg, Hesse); this land and its inhabitants were also identified with Mo-su monastery. It is important to trace the origin of Hesse. Chinese pilgrims’ account gives an insight to the land of the Hi-su tribes and the Hu-sha and Hissar settlements in the neighbourhood of Tsung-Ling mountains which is as same as Mt Meru or Mt Sumeru. Here lived the ‘Mother’ of the King of the Western King; it is also called as the country of the Setting Sun.
Messel Pit was a classical example of ancient migrants carrying with them different types of animals, birds and trees with them. As the Messel Pit is the former site of an oil shale mine, certain natural disaster like volcanic eruptions happened that buried most of the animals and their habitats which helped in fossilisations with time. This time period cannot be extended with human imagination to an imaginative geological time-scale. Fossilization happened after 8th c A.D. only.
Better would have been to study the Plants located in the Messel Pit Fossil Sites like : Ailanthus confucii(tree of heaven), Anacardium germanicum(Cashew tree), Canarium(member of the incense tree family), Mytilaria boglei(witch-hazel family) etc. Original habitats of crocodiles, frogs, turtles and salamanders should be traced through ancient texts.
