This ‘Wonder of the West’ heritage site of Unesco is a ‘Wonder of the World History of Ancient Migration’ which stands at the limit between Normandy and Brittany; this Abbey which has been dedicated to Archangel St Michel was founded in 966. Le Mont-Saint-Michel is an island at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranche; this river which runs from the department of Mayenne in north-western France forms the estuary at Mont-Saint-Michel, and its final stretch demarcates the border of the two duchies: Normandy and Brittany. Avranches is not only a commune in the Manche department in the Normandy, it identifies its inhabitants in the name Avranchinais also.
According to Unesco, ‘The new body of the …buildings, built from 1204, merits the name of “Merveille” (Marvel) …. Above the chaplaincy of the 12th century, it comprises the celebrated rooms known as the ‘Hôtes’ and the ‘Chevaliers’ ..’. A group of buildings here are called the chaplaincy or gallery of Aquilon. Keeping all these descriptive historic elements in view, academic scholarship claims that ‘Mont Saint-Michel is one of the most important sites of medieval Christian civilization’, and ‘the abbey today is a monument that testifies to the Christian past, where the monastical presence is ensured by a small community’.
In the same island where Mont-Saint-Michel stands, another island called Tombelaine marks its historic presence. They together make a geographical statement that put Brittany at the heart of cultural map of France along with Armorica.
Finistere in the west, Cotes-d’Armor in the north, Ille-et-Vilaine in the north-east, Loire in the south-east, and Morbihan in the south on the Bay of Biscay present a picture of the ancient hometowns of the migrants who settled in this region. The old Brittany region when observed through Nantes and Pays, makes a better sense of the ancient world and its geographical situations that sees biblical Bethany as same as Brittany of the heritage site.
