The heritage site Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay was founded by St Bernard in the Valley of Bourgogne in Franche-Comte in the Cote-d’Or Department in the commune of Marmagne.
Unesco sees the Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay as an ‘agricultural and industrial centre, workplace and place of worship for small groups living in self-sufficiency….’.
Cistercian Abbey refers to the Abbey of ‘Kroust’ people who were then living at the foot of Mt Caucasus. It was a clan name that identifies a group of followers of ‘Kroust’. Its other name-forms are, Kakustha, Kakustan and Khotan. Khotang of Indian puranas also meant the same place in the region of Mt Caucasus. Fontenay or Fonte-nay recognises the settlements of Bhuta/Bante people; Bante means ‘Monk’ who were then living in Cote( also Cete/Kuta)-desha or the region of Cote-d’Or; the latter identifies Arei or Ar country(not Ur) on the neighbourhood of Cote region. –nay means ‘nai’ means ‘river’; thus Fonte-nay refers to Benta/Bante river.
