Unesco’ Great Smoky Mountains National Park was homeland of the Cherokee people; some of the descendents of these people are now living in the Qualla Boundary to the south of this park.
According to Unesco, ‘The Park is one of the largest remaining remnants of the diverse Arcto-Tertiary geoflora era in the world. There are over 1300 native vascular plant species, including 105 native tree species, plus nearly 500 species of non-vascular plants …..The park is also home to the world’s greatest diversity of salamander species (31) …and is the centre of diversity for lungless salamanders, with 24 species.
Appalachian mountains are at the centre of this heritage property whose geological value has been explained in scientific lines where no science lives but human imagination survives.

According to scientists, ‘the oldest rock in the heritage park site are the Precambrian gneiss and schists which were formed over a billion years ago from the accumulation of marine sediments and igneous rock. In the Late Prembrian, the primordial ocean expanded and the more recent Ocoee Super group rocks formed from the accumulation of eroding landmass onto the continental shelf. In the Paleozoic Era, the ocean deposited a thick layer of marine sediments which left behind sedimentary rock. During the Ordovician Period, the collision of the North America and African tectonic plates initiated the Alleghenian orogeny that created the Appalachuian range. During the Mesozoic Era rapid erosion of softer sedimentary rocks re-exposed the Ocoee Supergroup formations’.
Human imagination has created its own faultline geological history of earth to accommodate the visible pattern of changes which human mind encounters from time to time. But this explanatory note on earth’s crust formation does not care the earliest records left behind by visionary forefathers whose geological address is not available in the laboratory of today’s academic mind.
Scientist who devised the geological theory of earth’s past, furthering this theory again says, ‘duirng the most recent Ice Age, the northeast-to-southwest Appalachian mountains allowed species to migrate southward along the slopes rather that finding the mountains to be a barrier….’.
