Abstract

Name of Zion is seen in bible in different name-forms — Wilderness of Zin, Followers of Zion, Mt Zion, Desert of Zion, Songs of Zion, Daughters of Zion, and Ezion-geber. The Bible declares that in the days to come, all the nations will gather at Mt Zion for final Judgment. This mountain is the Lord’s house; The Lord dwells and will ever dwell in Mt Zion. Meaning and identity of Zion is intimately associated with dwelling place of Yahweh. Glorification of Zion as the religious centre of the world with Lord’s reign from Zion has been versified to indicate that Migdal-eder is marked as a place from where his teachings spread to lead a virtuous life on earth.
Followers of Zeno founded a school in the city of Citium much before the advancement of biblical time. According to the Commentary of the Bible, about 320 BC, Zeno and his followers were taught in this school. City of Citium is same as Khotan of the Chinese pilgrim Hiouen Tsiang who visited this place during his visit to “ancient India” in 7th century A.D. This particular place has had various names in history, and during the time of the Buddha, its name was Kakustha(also Kakusthana). Buddha crossed the Kakustha river on his way to Kushinagar. Indian puranic tradition versified it with names like Kutastha, Kaka, Keka, Kotakana, Kikatanagara, and Kukuta etc. And City of Kapilavasthu, the birthplace of the Buddha, was a place in the Kapila or Kapitha district of the pilgrim, and it finds the City of Citium of the Bible, in the same district. City of Kapilavastu was established by the Sakyas with the direction of the Sage Kapila, who was born in the house of Sage Karddama, same as Cadmus of the Greek.
Sage Bhrugu was the first teacher of the Buddha, and Kalama, was his second teacher. At the time of the birth, Devala, the family teacher of the house of the Sakyan Sudhodana, king-father of the Buddha, was the first man, to see him. He advised his nephew Narada, that, the Buddha had arrived in the world, and he should be his follower. Sage Devala, Sage Bhrugu, and Kalama, did not survive till the time of Enlightenment of the Buddha. Indian puranic tradition has taken the name of Sage Kapila, Sage Bhrugu, Sage Devala and Sage Narada as various Avataras of Vishnu.
Name of Jina refers to Buddha only. Out of eighteen names of Gautama Buddha, it is that name which identifies him as Anata Jina, or the Supreme Teacher. In Indian traditional, cultural, and religious context, Sri Jagannatha is the only deity, who is known as Jina. This particular word is never used in case of any other Indian deities. Seat of worship of Sri Jagannatha at Puri, singularly glorifies the vast scene of trans-religious ideas on moksha or salvation. Most of the Indian puranas while mentioning the path of nirvana or moksha or salvation as the final aim of life, to achieve this aim they put the land of Sri Jagannatha at the centre of this thought which is the seat of Jina or Zion.
