What is Comari Islands to the Periplus, it is Kumari-dvipa to the Vayu purana; and it was known to Chinese pilgrim Hiouen Tsiang as Kamarupa(Kia-mo-lu-po), and the Bible sees the temple of a thousand Daughters of Zion living there to whom Solomon addressed in loveliest of his tones in his Song of the Songs. Kamephis of Egyptian mythology is synonymous with Comari of the Periplus which is always tagged with Comoro Islands like Kumari- Kumar island of Salmali-dvipa of Indian puranas.
In various Indian puranas, this name appears variously, and their narratives are different because they project different times of history in their descriptions where women were at the heart and mind of everything; this is how it describes its central position in the ancient world affairs. Kampilya is its another name during the epic the Mahabharata. It was capital of Raja Drupada, who held Draupadi’s swayambara here.
It was ancient capital of Chola, according to the Bhagavata purana( Bk.X .ch.79).
In Devi Bhagavata, in a prayer to the deity Durga, it is mentioned as ; ‘Kampilya basini Midye lokaam barada bhava’ (Oh Deity Midye, bless the multitudes); here Midye locates the ‘Home’ or Place of Worship at Midian, same as Marda, or Medea; this is a wonderful description of the purana that finds Kamrupa in one time same as Midian or Madra. It is Kama-giri of the (Devi Bhagavata, viii, 11).
According to Ramayana, Mahadeva is said to have destroyed Madana(identifying Midian), the God of Love, at Kama-asrama with the fire of his third Eye (Ramayana, Bala, ch.23 ). It was situated at the confluence of the Sarayu and the Ganges; It is again the same as Madana-Tapovana of the Raghu-vamsa (ch.II,v.13) ; But according to Skanda (Avnti,ch.34), the incident took place at the Devadaru-vana.
Brihad- Dharma(I,14) and the Padma Purana(Svarga,ch11) both calls it Kamakhya on the bank of the river Devika; it is again the same as Mayapuri of the Brihat Siva Purana( I,ch.16 ; Kama-koshthi was on of its other name.
At Kamrupa, Krishna fought with Narakasura here (Brihat-Dharma, Madhya,ch.10).
The Bible similarly depicts Qumran at the ‘centre’ of ‘many’ or ‘all’ biblical events when term like Hebrew Qumran is observed. There is no difference between Qumran and the Jerusalem as latter’s First Temple exists here, The Dead Sea Scroll in which mention is being made on Qumran Caves points to the ancient Qumran from where the Scrolls were carried away by the migrants of the locality during the ‘Flood’ over to their new settlements. Here the meaning of the ‘Dead Sea’ should be seen as referring to the cause of disappearance of the ‘sea’, .i.e. the ‘Caspian Sea’ due to a volcanic eruption.
And this occasions to further to the meanings of some of the most important Hebrew words which are seen in these scrolls like : ‘mishmarot’(about festivals and priestly courses), ‘pesharim’, ‘Yahad’, ‘Hodayot’, and ‘halakhic midrash’ As scholars attribute all of the Qumran Scrolls to the Essenes, to whom they consider as one of the three major Jewish sects in the Second Temple period, and as this opinion is not correct when Essenese is as a deity, rather it may be academically seen as a Jewish group of priests who were in charge of the temple of the deity Essenese. .
The Periplus describes the geographical situation of the Comari island in the following manner: ‘Beyond Bacare there is the Dark Red Mountain, and another district stretching along the coast toward the south, called Paralia. The first place is called Balita ; it has a fine harbour and a village by the shore. Beyond this there is another place called Comari, at which are the Cape of Comari and a harbour ; hither come those men who wish to consecrate themselves for the rest of their lives, and bathe and dwell in celibacy ; and women also do the same ; for it is told that a goddess once dwelt here and bathed.
From Comari toward the south this region extends to Colchi, where the pearl fisheries are.. ; and it belongs to the Pandion Kingdom. Beyond Colchi there follows another district called the Coast Country, which lies on a bay, and has a region inland called Argaru. At this place, and nowhere else, are brought the pearls gathered on the coast thereabouts; and from there are exported muslins, those called Argaritic’.
Near it is the water source of En-Gedi(Ct 1:14) where David sought refuge from Saul(1 Sm 23:29) ;The isolated mountain fortress of Masada, two-thirds of the way down the sea, was the last stronghold in the Jews struggle against the Romans in the A.D.73, and the valleys between En-gedi and Masada are dotted with caves that were outposts of the Jewish resistance. On the south end of the west coast stands the great salt mountain and the pillar of salt that once was Lot’s wife(Gn 19:26), The east shore marked by Arnon and the Zered; and the hot springs of Callirrhoe on the north part of this shore. Down the east side is the plain of Lisan(‘tongue’).
Qumran settlements were destroyed by both fire and earthquakes simultaneously; a great earthquake occurred in the Jumna Valley in 31 B.C. Herod was a follower of Essenes; the destruction did not happen by the fire of the Hasmonian Antigonus and the Parthian enemies against Herod. Rather it was caused by a volcanic eruption. The similarity between Qumran life and that of the Jerusalem Church described in Acts has been accepted by scholarly world.
