‘The world was regarded as consisting of seven islands, each one encircles by a sea. The Island at the centre is called Jambudvipa, the southern division was called Bharata-varsha; the map of Jambudvipa’.
Rockhill says that the Buddha passed through the Jambudvipa in his last journey to Kushinagara. He also There existed in Jambudvipa Eight Chaityas of the body-relics of the Blessed-One.
Buddhist literature speaks of Asita Kala Deval’s eyes rolling over whole of the Jambudvipa.
According to Pali texts, Jambudvipa derives its name from the Jambu-tree(also called Naga Tree) which grows there; its trunk fifteen yojanas in girth, its outstretching branches fifty yojanas in length, its shade one hundred yojanas,
On account of this, Jambudvipa is also called Jambu-sanda. The Buddhas are born only in Jambudvipa.
Fa-hians’ account mentions that Jambudvipa was known to Chinese as Shin-tup, which means ‘Sindhu’.
Hiouen Tsianga, perhaps, gives one of the reliable information on Jambudvipa of his time : ‘ On three sides, India is bounded by a great sea; on the north it is protected by the Snowy Mountains; it is broad at the north and narrow in the south; its shape is like that of a half-moon’. India in his time was divided into 72 kingdoms.
