Levi had three sons: Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites; and with them a broad concept of Levitical families, Levitical cities, and Levites around Jerusalem developed with which the biblical history of the priest class people are seen through. The clan of Kohathites is subdivided into descendants of Aaron, and the latter is also considered as belonging to the priest class. Division of territory among the three sons of Levi is quite prominent though at times presents a very confusing picture because of their close proximity.
