It was the kingdom of Raja Uttanapada, father of Dhruva. Uttanapada is exactly the same as Utnapishtim of the epic Gilgamesh.
It was the birthplace and capital of Raja Salivahana who founded the Saka era in 78 A.D.
It was the capital of ancient Asmaka ; all Indian puranas have glorified this place in many lines of their lofty verses; it was founded by Raja Ila (Ramayana,Uttara,ch.90) ; Urvasi-tirtha was one of its other names.
It identifies the site of the Tree of Wisdom or Po Tree at Prayaga; the other name of which is Akshaya Bata. Chinese pilgrims visited this place.
Pururava is said to have been the king of the country of Prayaga, the capital of which was Pratisthana; Nahusa, Yayati, Puru, Dushanta and Bharata are said to have reigned in this city also.
