Pindar is regarded as one of the greatest of the ancient Greek lyric poets. He is notably known for his victory odes; he was born around 522 or 518 B..C. in Cynoscephalae near Thebes in Boeotia. He was son of Daiphantus and Cleodice who claim their royal origin to Aegidae of Thebes.
Pindar’s name is well preserved in Pali texts. He is known to Pali texts as Pindola whose verses were preserved both in Milindapanha and Theragatha. His father was the chaplain of King Udena of Kosambi. He was a teacher who migrated to Rajagriha. He belonged to Bharadvaja-gotra. He was greedy of food, so Suttas were named after him who ate out of one bowl only.
Pindola was also name of a Pratyeka Buddha. We find names like Pinda, Pinda-patadayaaka-Tissa, Pinda-patika Thera, Pinda-patika–Tissa,
Reading of the Suttas connected with this name shows that this name Pinda, and Pindola describes the ‘whole’ of the ‘inhabited world’ from Kosambi to Rajagriha to Panchasala, Veluvana, and Kapilavastu.
This name is also linked to history of Asoka’s time. Today there two villages exist in this name, one in the ancient Greece region on the bank of the river Saraswati, and the other near the river Daya, or the Indus, which is identified with history of Roman civilization.
