The term ‘Underworld’ marks the deified region of the ‘inhabited world’; the seven places included in this immense dark geographical situations of the ancient world were : Atala, Sutala, Bitala, Garbhasthala, Mahatala, Sritala, and Patala. They then stood in an order from ‘north’ to ‘east’. The dark region which started from Atala identifies the setting of the sun and beginning of the night from that place.
Atala is as same as Atalia of Alexander’s history; Alexander killed Atalia immediately after his enthronement who was an inhabitant of the place known by his name itself.
The last land of the region Patala is as same as the Negave region of the ancient world which identifies ‘South’ of the Bible or the ‘Land of the ‘Serpents’ or ‘Nagas’ of Indian puranas ; this include Bethany and the whole of the deified Uttara Kuru region of the ancient world. Its tall trees were then responsible for enhancing the darkness of the region. Bethany is the third Underworld that identifies Bitala or Bethlehem of the Bible.
Maha-tala is Mahanaim of the Bible and identifies king Mahanama’s place of residence. It is also called Mahasala in some other ancient texts. Sutala is as same as Shalem or Sullam or Jerusalem; some authors find God Sse as inhabitants of this land. Garbhsthala is Nabhisthal or the Middle of the Earth of ancient texts. Garbha means ‘womb’ and it identifies ‘nabhi’ means ‘navel’.
