Colombo’s Cartagena monuments are a part of religious history of human civilization; its system which divides the city into three zones : San Pedro, San Diego and Gethsemani, speaks of the social segregation according to its people’s interests. The first zone keeps the cathedral and the palaces; the second is filled with dwellings of merchants and of the middle class people, and the third is identified with popular quarter.
Cartagena which is known as Cartagena de Indias finds its root in ‘Kota-garha’ means the ‘fortress’ of Kota country; it also points to ‘kotha-ghara’ means the ‘gathering-centre’ of its citizens. It is more interesting to see, as scholars point out, that, it was an essential link in the route of the West Indies.
The term ‘San’ anciently identifies a sacred place, a sacred person, and also a sacred tree; it identifies the monastery in this name . It is marks the Catherine Monastery in the ancient Babylon at the ‘centre of the earth’ where its king wished to build a ladder to the ‘Heaven’.
