It is a wonderful world heritage site that tells the story of the ‘first–land’ of human civilization and the Great Flood that devastated the ‘inhabited world’ ; name Diocletian is exactly the same as Deucalion, ‘the Greek Noah’, or the great Koliyan (Cholian) King of the ancient history whose wife was Pyrrha or Priya of Pali literature. Their name is also associated with ‘Creation’ story of making men and women out of stones.
Description of the Gates of the palaces holds the ancient identity of the Dioclean Palace. The Southern Gate is called the ‘Golden Gate’(Porta Aenea); the Eastern Gate is called Silver Gate( Porta Argentea) ; Western Gate is known as the Iron Gate(Porta Ferrea); and the Northern Gate is referred to as the Persistyle which gives access to the Cathedral of St Domnius on the East; while Temple of Jupiter stands on this eastern side, the Temple of Aesculapius stands on the west of the Peristyle; a road divides the street into the north-south, and this street is called ‘cardo’; it is interesting to note that the palace is linked to the island of Brac and Salonitan from where materials were collected to build the palace. .
The four names of the Dioclean Palace Gates identify the ‘four quarters’ of the ‘inhabited world’ that identifies four tribes as well as the ancient shrine at ‘Sri’. These names also gives a brief geographical picture of the Jambudvipa of Ptolemy as noted in Chinese pilgrims Hiouen Tsiang’s accounts.
