This world heritage site of Iceland is a national park in the municipality of Blaskgabyggo about 40 km northeast of Reykjavik. It contains the physical remains of the Alþing(also Althing, means the parliamentary assembly). The kinship between the Alþing, Þingvellir, and Germanic Law and governance is read through the cultural history of people of Iceland and the written codification of the Grágás Laws.
Origin of the term ‘Þingvellir’ has been linked to various other name-forms : the name is most commonly anglicised as Thingvellir, which appears like Tingvellir, Thingvalla or Tingvalla in other languages. The spelling Pingvellir is misleading, as the letter “p” does not correspond, as scholars say, to the letter ‘Þ’ which is pronounced as ⟨th⟩ is in English. In ancient texts ‘p’ is pronounced as ‘b’; but this case is different here. Dingwall and Tingwall in Scotland, and Thingwall in England, Tynwald on the Isle of Man and Tingvoll in Norway are seen by scholars as bearing the same root and the same meaning. According to history of Iceland, or the Book of Settlement(Landnamabok), the settlement began here in A.D 874 when the Norwegian chieftain Ingolfr Arnarson became the first permanent Norwegian settler on the island and his descendants became powerful in the country. People of Norse and Celtic came later and settled in the island.
Etymology of ‘Þingvellir ‘ bears interesting part of the ancient history and it links different historic peoples and their lands while defining their shepherdic culture and their habit of going from one place to the other along with their cattle. Here the chieftain is called ‘gooi’ , the Greek ‘Gaii’ and the Indian ‘gai’ or ‘Goru’(plural) or ‘go-mata’ connected with ‘gostha’ as same as ‘Gothic’ of other language.
The root of ‘ping’ is in ‘pingiya’ and/or ‘pingiyani’, or ‘pingala’ ; it is a place-name; name of a king; name of a race of elephants; a group of followers of the Buddha etc; Albing and Althing are different place-names and were neighbourly to Alping same as Albing referring to Al-borg; and Mt Gerizim same as Girima from which name of Girimur has been derived ;is again neighbourly to it; it was seat of Yax(Yakkha) Alavika; Girima was the stronghold of the Skythians. Name of Germany finds its root in this Gerizim or Girima again the same as Girinar and it is well connected with history of Nathan of the Bible; Grágás which is as same as the Gargis or the Gargas identifies a group of scribes and ancient law-makers who were then living on the bank of the river Gaga means the river Ganges(Gaga of the Bible).
Chinese pilgrim Hiouen Tsiang reports on a village called Pibg-lo; his accounts on ancient India finds different names like Ping-ki-lo, Ping-wang and Ping-yang; according to this report, ancient scholars were reading four Vedas; the first is called Shau; it relates to the preservation of life and natural condition. The second is called Sse; it relates to the rules of sacrifice and prayer. The third is called ‘ping’ ; it relates to peace and decorum, casting of lots, military affairs, and army regulations. The fourth is called Shu; it relates to various branches pf science, incantations and medicine. Ping-chou was noted for its silk and cotton fabrics.
