Jamaica’s Blue and John Crow Mountain heritage site very clearly addresses its inhabitants’ ancient homeland in such tone and tradition that it keeps other migrants as noticed in Unesco’s other heritage sites to follow their ancient home address in deep sincerity of their own historic accounts.
Here Blue Mountain marks the Nila-giri where Sri Jagannath of Puri, known as ‘Jina’ is worshipped; John is as same as Zion of the Bible. The Temple Site is the Place of Enlightenment of the Buddha; it is called Blue Mountain because it was home to a kind of Blue Birds. When the Buddha received ‘Enlightenment’, the Blue Birds collectively opened their wings and flew across this mountain. From name of the birds followed the name of the mountain. Here Nila means ‘Blue’.
Unesco on this heritage site says, ‘the site encompasses a rugged and extensively forested mountainous region in the south-east of Jamaica, which provided refuge first for the indigenous Tainos fleeing slavery and then for Maroons(former enslaved peoples)……Maroons developed a spiritual connections with this mountains..’.
Cultural heritage of the Maroon people associated with this heritage site reads the history of their migration through their settlements, trails, viewpoints, hiding places, etc. that form the Nanny Town Heritage Route. ‘The mountains are also home to Maroon ancestors’ spirits and therefore provide a link for Maroons to their past and preceding generations’.
Tainos refers to their homeland at Tanais of the Bible or Tyna of Alexander’s history whih relates itself with Wutu and Sulla or Sullum; but the main reference is to the Maroon- people to whom academic scholarship know as the ‘former enslaved people’. This meaning is not the correct one; it refers exactly to Maurya or the people of Moeris land which is connected to the story of the ‘Rock’ called Aoronous and the bird Peacock. They were a class of Royal People to which Mary, mother of Christ, belonged. The island according to them is Xay-maca means ‘Mecca’ of ‘Ka’(may be aksha referring to ark) ; K is name of a God. Here the name marks the God Yahweh; Name Jamaica again pinpoints the God Jama, the King of Death in Jerusalem; seat of worship of Jama is neighbourly to the land of Sur and Moeris or Mayura as same as the Mauryas. Arawak means ‘Arka’; this identifies both the geographical position of the ‘Rock as well as the seat of worship of Jama. The term ‘Nani’ means ‘Priestess’. The name is found both in the Avesta as well as in Pali texts. Indian puranic tradition considers ‘nani’ as same as ‘Sister;.
