According to Unesco, Lake Malawi heritage site is important ‘for the study of evolution’; the entire lake region covers the Galapagos Islands and its extended zones which comes under the jurisdiction of three sovereign states i.e. Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique.
Property of the site finds it as ‘home of many hundreds of cichlid fish, which are locally called “mbuna”. These mbuna fishes display a significant example of biological evolution… against the background of the Great African Rift Valley escarpment’.
Malawi is the second home of the ancient Mallas, or the people of Mo-lo tribes, who were also called li sse because they did ‘sink prostrate on the earth’ when they saw the Buddha’s Nibbana or nirvana. Buddha’s mortal body got its last rites performed in the land of the Mallas. So the name of fish ’mbuna’ seems to have derived its name from this ‘nibbana’. Nibban is mokshya which in biblical literature finds its meaning spread through many terms; it is as same as Molech or sacrifice; in Hebrew it is msh, that identifies Moses on its English translation. Hebrew Meolel (means ‘sucking’! ), which identifies Ahaz, marks his nativity in the land of the Mo-lo.
Malla country was then situated near the lake Manasseh and ancient Jerusalem. Bodhisattva was born as a ‘fish’ in this Manasseh Lake which according to ancient texts, fed the hungry people during the time of loss of crops.
