Unesco sees the 17^th and 18^th c military history connected with this site through Spanish Crown. Description of this site marks its diverse fortification for forty-three kilometers covering the surrounding areas of the river Chagres where stands the San Lorenzo Castle (originally “San Lorenzo el Real del Chagre”) ; the fortifications around the Bay of Portobelo, San Fernando,  Lower Battery, Upper Battery, Hilltop Stronghold, San Jerónimo Battery Fort, Santiago, Castle of Santiago de la Gloria, Fort Farnese, the La Trinchera site, the Buenaventura Battery,  and the San Cristóbal renders a complete and full picture of this heritage site  on the Caribbean side, and along the coast of the Province of Colón.

Forts of Santiago, San Jeronimo and San Fernando, and also at San Lorenzo constitute a defensive system which includes Veracruz (Mexico), Cartagena (Colombia), and Havana (Cuba) to protect the commercial interest of the controlled region.

Portobelo though sounds like the Peito-brukshya(Bata-brukshya) or the ‘Tree of Wisdom’ , in reality, it pinpoints the ‘patali tree’, the Chinese Po-cha-li tree which identifies the ancient Pataliputra. The tree is also known as the ‘tree of the son-in-law’ ; San or Sana as usual narks the monastery at Sana. Jeronimo though identifies itself with Gerizim or Garima of history, migration of its people to Ceylon has been versified. Fernando as Bharanda and Lorenzo as Oronto or Odonto uniquely marks a core group of migrants from a particular area; and all the places form a compact geographical zone around the river Achiravati or the present Chagre flowing through Colon or the ancient Kolhan, as same as Ceylon falling under the kingdom of Kosala.
