Unesco’ heritage sites in Philippines tell the story of its Spanish colonial past connected with its 16th century churches at Manila, Santa Maria, Paoay, and Ming-ao. Collectively known as the Baroque churches, they exhibit building principles following the Ley de las Indias or Seat of Worship in Indus Valley region.
‘The Baroque Churches of the Philippines is a serial inscription consisting of four Roman Catholic churches’, which ‘are located in separate areas of the Philippine archipelago, two at the northern island of Luzon, one at the heart of Intramuros, Manila, and the other in the central Visayas island of Iloilo’ … The common and specific attributes of the churches are their squat, monumental and massive appearance, which illustrates a fortress/protective-like character in response to pirates, marauders and to the geologic conditions of a country that is prone to seismic activities’.
Church history of the heritage sites are identified with history of the region of Philippine which is identical with Phulapura of Indian puranas. It is as same as Phulathamba or the Chinese An-mo-lo; and this name identifies the name of Manila. It was a Greek settlement in the east under King Milinda. It is exactly neighbourly to Visala country at the foot of the Mt Imaos and marks the Visaya Church; the next neighbouring country was Ujjain and Luzon stands for this place which was also called Oz in the Bible. Most interesting is the name of Iloilo or the seat of worship of Goddess Loi-lo(Aloi) which identifies the Deer Park called Lu-ye; it was again near the Mt Alavi or Alborg; the region was under the Lara(Lo-lo) of the Lae-lih or the Siha dynasty which identifies itself with the Ramanaka or the Romans on the west. This Deer Park pinpoints the Church Ming-ao whose root is ‘mriga’ means ‘Deer’; it is Migdal of the Bible where meaning of the Hebrew Migdal has been misinterpreted as Megiddo, that identifies ancient Magadha. Church Paoay bears the name of ‘Po’ , or the Tree of Wisdom also known as ‘Bo’ Tree. It is again connected with Deer Park and the Visala country in the same line of Buddhist history of the region with whose history of Churches is directly related.
The Church Santa Maria marks its root with Mt Moriah, or the country producing myrrh; this identifies moeris or the country of Mayura or the Peacock. Story of Bell Towers is the story of the origin of the word ’ghanti’ or Kin-ti or ‘ghanta’ in Khotan kingdom as well as in ancient kingdom of Magadha.
