Portugal holds the most beautiful story of the ancient world through its world heritage site at Angra Tower. It is so expansive in nature that its epic position finds names of Azores and Angra akin to its name in various times of history.

Unesco’s findings that Angra ‘is directly and tangibly associated ….exchanges between the world’s great civilizations’ bears certain classified truth which modern historians though have felt could not read out the dimmed voice of its past.

Portugal identifies itself with the great ancient city of Tagara which found most of the other cities of the ancient world associated with it both for commercial and religious reasons.

Angra is identical with Anga country of Indian epics; both in the Ramayana and in the Mahabharata this name appears which was neighbourly to both Kosala and Magadha kingdoms and identifies the rivers Saraju(Sajur Valley of the Bible) and the Ganges at its western boundaries.

What is important here is the name Angra do Heroismo and Azores which are not only historically but also geographically attached to this country of Anga or Angra.  Heroismo marks the ancient Suhma or Sumha or Suram, or Smyron whose history is read with histories of world epics and also with the history of the Buddhist period. It is directly linked to the port Tamralipta(Barygaza) and Adulia. Azores is situated as Azania of the Periplus that identifies not only the City of Troy but also the City of Tagara and the ancient Ajodhya of the Ramayana, Ajodhya of the epic Ramayana was the City of Ajas or the Nagas, same as the Serpents on the ‘south’ or in the Negev. Tereceira pinpoints Tri-sira(means ‘Three-Heads), or the Anga, Banga and Kalina region standing in a queue. Smyron also marks the birthplace of Homer; Avesta’s Mt Syamaka and Syamagiri of Indian puranas identify the same place; Surama in the time of the Buddha was a port that marks the Tamralipta of latter time. Radha which is again as same as Lata finds itself as a neighbour to both Tagara and Suhma.

Sudhodana, father of the Buddha, built a seven storied building called Surama, means ‘beautiful’, at this place on the bank of the river Rohini(same as Saraswati). Syamagiri or Mt  Syamaka identifies Mt Caucasus and it was a part of the country of Anga. Puranic literature finds Campa as capital of Anga; and Campa is as same as Kamboj and Kubera or Cyprus. Sage Kasyapa’s hermitage was in Campa and his birthplace was in Sobhavatipura or Subhav(Sophia of the Bible) that marks the San Sebastiano and San Joaso is identical with Sage Janhu’s hermitage near it.

Unesco’s findings that, ‘It has been conjectured, and not without reason, that this choice was imposed by the navigators and their cartographers’, carries truth with it. It shows how ancient mariners kept contact with each other while navigating the unknown waters for exploring new shores for their safe settlements..
