Pitons is a volcanic world heritage site of Unesco which predominates ‘over the Saint Lucian landscape, being visible from virtually every part of the island and providing a distinctive landmark for seafarers’. It is situated near the town of Soufriere and includes two volcanic spires: Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rising side by side and both being bridged by Piton Mitan ridge also known as the Qualibou Depression. It is a part of the Lesser Antilles, and is located in the Eastern Caribbean Sea. According to historians, ‘Petroglyphs and diverse artifacts bear witness of the Amerindian Carib population’.
This volcanic island’s highest point is called Mount Gimie; both Piton and Gimie are located between Soufriere and Choiseul on the western side of the island. The capital city is known as Castries. Vieux Fort is name of one of its towns. While Gimie is as same as Girima, or Mt Gerizim of the Bible, Choiseul exactly marks the Kosala kingdom of history. Castries is no other than the ancient Caesarea same as Kesuria of the Roman history.
Strabo writing on Diospolis or City of Gods and quoting Homer, says, ‘with her hundred gates, through each of which issues two hundred men with horses and chariots’. Prophet Nahum paints another picture of the city after its capture by the Assyrians: ‘populous No( or No-Amon) that was situated among the rivers, that had the waters round about it……Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim were thy helpers…’. Piton is identified with ancient Bethany or the land of the Peithon, the land famous for its deified position in the ancient world. Its history is linked to history of most of the ancient dynasties. Qualibou here pinpoint the seat of worship of Kubera or the Cyprus or Kamboj. Bethany is Bethlehem whose position signifies the geographical situation of While Gros that marks Ros neighbourly to it along with Mitan which is Mytellene or Mithila, or Matiapara of Indian puranas. Peithon people uses three canes to hit the followers of the goddess on whose temple door they stand as its first priests. Because they hit with canes, therefore they are called ‘pituni’ means ‘he who hits’. And ‘mitani’ means a ‘woman-friend’.
