San Mario entered into the list of world heritage site because it is considered as ‘one of the world’s oldest republics and the only surviving Italian city-state, representing an important stage in the development of democratic models in Europe and worldwide’. Unesco again observes, ‘The Historic Centre of San Marino on Mount Titano includes all the elements which constituted the foundations of this identity…and there is a high degree of authenticity of the location…’
But academic scholarship does not seem to move forward beyond this point to show how this city-state idea evolved; and at what point of time in history its ancient identity connects this city-state with others.
Mount Titano derives its root from Mt Ita which was a mountain of Aparantaka or the Appennones. Adding ‘San’ to Marino enhances its sacredness and it thus identifies itself with ancient island Moeris or Mayura of the Mauryan dynasty(Moriahs) which was neighbourly to ancient Jerusalem. The Bible sees this place along with Mt Moriah in whose house Mother of Jesus, Mary was born. Village standing north of this heritage site is called Murata and it signifies its origin through the name of Mura, Murari, and Maurya whose symbol was the Peacock; Adriatic Sea similarly finds its origin in ‘Ad country or the Udak of Eratosthenes maps. The interesting ancient identity of the heritage site is preserved in the names of Marecchi River and Cando River of the region; these two rivers and their plains Marecchi Torello, Rimini, Riccione Ausa, Marche, and Montefeltro scan the long historicity of the inhabitants which needs to be visited again.
Marecchi—Sage Marichi( also a biblical name)
Torello—identifies Tola, and Toya(Troy/Tyre of the classics)
Cando River—River Chandra, same as Scamander marks the Fertile Crescent
Rimini—Goddess Rumkuni; name of a tree.
Riccione Ausa—Rishi Ricchika
Marche—Macha; the Fish Country
Montefeltro—Wutu Muntain or Altai mountain identifies both Lata and El.
