The Historic Town of Banská Štiavnica is located in the mountains of Štiavnické Vrchy which was earlier a dwelling site of Slavs, perhaps, under the King of Franz dynasty. This heritage site was also called ‘terra banensium’. Scholars speak of this first mining area’s historical connection with Celtic Cotini tribes in the 3rd c B.C. Historians also think of these tribes’ deportation to Pannonia during the Marcomannic War by Romans.
Unesco finds this heritage site with its mining activities as early as in 1156. The locals know Stiavnica as ‘acidic stream’, and the settlement on the hill top as ‘Bana’ which locally means ‘the mine’. The hill above is called Ligotava hora or Glanzen-berg; the system of water reservoir and channels is known as ‘tajchy’ which help in draining out waters from the flooded mines.
This heritage sites defines its history through the term ‘-vnica’ which means ‘banika’ or the ‘traders’ community’ ; ‘baniyas’ means the community of ‘gold-smiths’. Stia-vnica identifies the ‘women-traders’ from the region of Takka or from Tahia or from Azania. All these names identify the region adjacent to ancient Rome; while mountains Vrchy pinpoints ‘Vajra’ means the ‘Thunder Mountain’ or the ‘Chakra’ or the ‘Disc Mountain’(Catherine Church).
Origin of early Slavs holds the mirror to the ancient world geographical situation. Its origin as most of the historians have pointed out is connected with ‘Veneti’ which means ‘vanita’ or ‘daughter’ ; it is Hebrew ‘bonita’ means daughter’, the Daughters of Zion of the Bible; wonderful history links the Slavs with ancient Sravasti which is the root of the ‘slavs’’s historic identity.
