Unesco’s heritage site at Monticello marks the plantation home of Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826), author of the American Declaration of Independence and third President of the United States, His ideal ‘academic village’(1817-1826) is still at the centre of the University of Virginia. It is situated eight km away in Charlottesville, in central Virginia.
Charlottesville, previously called Monacan village, also known as Monasukapanough, was one of the eleven Native American Indian Nations; the nation is primarily located in the Piedmont, in Amherst County Virginia near Lynchburg. There are satellite groups in Maryland, Tennessee, and Ohio whose native language is a Siouan and is related to the tribes of Tutelo, Saponi and Occaneech.
The name ‘Virginia’ refers to ‘Vagini’ means ‘Sister’ which also identifies Bhikshunis means ‘Women of Buddhist Order’; Wingandacoa which is related to this name refers to peoples of Angada and Kua countries;
The James River Monacan area along with the Rappahannock River region covers the Richmond and the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Piedmont where Manacan’s northern Manahoac allies were living; Coastal Powhatan people were hostile to them. Monacan called the area of these people as Amai Amanuhkan; Powhatan chief’s son was weroance Parahunt during colonial time when Captain Christopher Newpart was there; during this time, there were two Monacan towns: Massinacak(Mahock) and Mowhemencho; Massinacak were staying at the mouth of the Mohawk Creek, the Mowhemencho occupied the region of between Bernard’s Creek and Jones’ Creek, the present day Goochland; their capital was at Rassawek; Albemarle County located in the Piedmont region shares its historic past with Alaba of Alexander;s history; it is as same as Oleb, Alavi, Eleb and Albourg of other ancient literature.
It is wrong to say that the first people arrived in Virginia 12,000 years ago. It seems right to suggest that farming began sometimes in 900 A.D; towns of Algonquian peoples such as Werowocomoco in the the Tidewater region identifies its people with Wero means ‘Arya’, Woco means ‘Uruk’ and Moco means ‘Makka’ peoples; Tsenacommacah refers to Senani people of Kamma or Konarka region means the Uruk or Arka region;

Saponi or the Monasukapanough people were previously living in the present day Charlottesville; these groups were closely related with the Sioun Manahoac(means ‘Mahanayaka’) . Charlottesville is located in the centre of the Commonwealth of Virginia along the Rivanna River, a tributary of the James, just west of the Southwest Mountain, parallel to the Blue Mountains.
Names of tribes like Nahvssan, Mahock and Rechahecrians appears who were described as opposed to the Powhatan tribes in the colonial times; scholars see Rechahecrians as Erie groups. During this time Mowhemencho and Mahock were towns belonging to Monacan people; at that time this area was found to have been occupied by the Doeg people. Monacan tradition mentioned names of four women : Pash, Sepoy, Askrin and Maraskarin, who were responsible for origin of human race, and this gave rise to division of four tribes.
